Essure

AT METRO OBGYN, WE PROVIDE SEVERAL OPTIONS FOR BIRTH CONTROL, INCLUDING ESSURE®. ESSURE IS PERMANENT BIRTH CONTROL THAT WORKS WITH YOUR BODY TO CREATE A BARRIER AGAINST PREGNANCY.

This procedure is an alternative to tubal ligation and takes about 30 minutes to complete in our office. Most women go home less than an hour after the procedure and return to normal activities in a day or two.

The Procedure

Using a transvertical tubal access catheter, the healthcare provider places the small, flexible Essure inserts into the fallopian tubes. Since the inserts are placed through the natural pathways of the vagina and cervix, no incisions are needed. These micro-inserts cause tissue growth in and around them creating a blockage in the fallopian tubes and preventing sperm from reaching the egg.

Essure inserts do not contain hormones.  They are made from some of the same materials, such as nickel-titanium alloy, that are used in heart stents and other medical devices.  Once placed inside the body small traces of nickel are released. Patients allergic to nickel may have an allergic reaction that could include rash, itching, and hives. The healthcare providers at Metro OBGYN will take time to explain the procedure and help you decide if Essure is the right procedure for you.

Recovery Time

Recovery time following the procedure is minimal. A 12-week follow-up appointment is required where an X-ray will be taken to confirm successful results.

It can take longer than three months for Essure to be effective. Other forms of contraception will need to be used until your healthcare provider tells you the procedure has been successful..

Be sure to speak to your doctor regarding which method of birth control you should be using during this time. Women using an intrauterine device need to switch to another method of birth control. If you rely on Essure for birth control before your doctor tells you the procedure was successful you are at risk of becoming pregnant.
